“Good morning.”

“Good morning, Bill.”

“Your task this week is to generate sales leads for the Renault Dealer network using the Internet. The winning team will be the one that generates the biggest number of leads. Good luck with the task.”

That could very well be a task that Bill Cullen might set for the new batch of candidates in this year’s Apprentice. As far as I know, it’s not an actual task, but it could very well be if the current competition being run by Renault is anything to go by.

Having seen it tweeted a couple of times, I shuffled on over to the site to enter the draw for one of 50 free car services.

A couple of things struck me about the page. First and foremost was the fact there were no terms and conditions governing the competition. This is (as far as I’m concerned) a basic minimum for any large company running a competition.

I’d like to know such things as

What location can I get my car serviced if I won

What does a “service” actually mean. Is it a mini service, full service, parts excluded.

Has the service to be completed before a certain date

Can a service be pre-booked or is it limited to certain days of the week.

When is the closing date for the competition

The second thing that struck me was the little tick box next to the submit button saying “Keep me updated with Renault News & Special Offers”. That’s fair enough on a competition website. Having it ticked already just screams “spammer” to me.

Not suggesting Renault Ireland WOULD spam people but I much prefer to tick the box myself to “opt in” to receive marketing material. This was the general consensus from others when I asked the question on Twitter recently. “Sneaky” was a word used to describe the practice. Web designer Irishstu made a very good point that by not having an opt-in, a company leaves itself open to spam accusations if people click submit and don’t realise the tick box was checked.

I tweeted Renault Ireland 3 times to ask about the terms and conditions and received no reply, which prompted me to write this blog post.

Whoever is running the competition for Renault needs a few basic lessons in operating a Twitter account and running a competition. If this were an Apprentice task & they were back in the boardroom with Bill Cullen, I definitely think they failed and should hear the words “You’re fired.”

Some people think that Jackie Lavin is “scary”. I actually used to think that myself. The impression was formed during the first series of the Apprentice. I recall comments in the liveblogs of the show that I wasn’t the only one who had the same opinion.

The few episodes I’ve seen of the current series has changed my opinion. Jackie seems to be getting more screen time and there’s been a few shots of her smiling and she comes across very warm.

So this post is a public statement that I no longer think Jacke Lavin is scary. If I met Jackie, I’d even say sorry for even having thought it.

If anyone wants to know what a scary celebrity looks like, just see below.

Let there be no more talk of Jackie being scary from this point forward.

I thank you.

There is, literally, only one place to go for everything related to the Apprentice Ireland 2009. That place is Culch.ie. There’s news, reviews, previews, debate and of course the liveblog. Basically, way more than you can point a finger at and say “You’re Fired” (stop groaning at the back).

The first show of the new series is on screen tomorrow (Monday 21st September) at 9pm on TV3 followed by the You’re Fired studio discussion. It promises to be a great series. I’m hoping to see Bill being a lot tougher this time round with a bit more time spent showing the tasks and not as much of the boardroom.

You still here? Did I not say to go to Culch.ie for all Irish Apprentice stuff ? Go, go on now. Be off with you.

… will be revealed tomorrow night on TV3 after the final episode airs. Here’s the preview of the show.

UPDATE : Delighted that Brenda won. Said it a few weeks back that she is who I would hire for her direct, no nonsense approach.

Brenda and Nicky have to run a charity event and “present their charity in a novel and interesting way”.

Bill speaks of the great journey the candidates have been on. It’s one of the most overused phrases on reality tv and really grinds my gears. I suppose for some of them, it was a journey.

It was also a journey for the live blog too. Major hat tip to Anthony, Darragh, Darren, Deborah, Gavan and Ciara and Lottie (best blog name ever) who all hosted a live blog over the weeks and kept it going. And a big hat tip to Ian as well for doing the reviews when he could too.

I’m still rooting for Brenda to win. All will be revealed tomorrow at 9pm on TV3.

The last 8 weeks have all gone by in such a blur. Everyone has their favourite to win at this stage. I don’t have a favourite per se, but if a gun was put to my head and I had to pick a winner I’d say Brenda. That’s who I would employ anyway. She’s a level headed, practically minded, straight talking kind of woman. She has run her own business and anyone who has done that is a grafter and knows what it means to earn money and turn a profit.

The best candidate won’t necessarily win, we all know that. It boils down to the “performance” in the boardroom. Who’s got the bullshit bingo lingo down pat? Who has the longest knife and is willing to dig it in deep? Ultimately though, who really truly wants to don the warpaint and become a warrior for Bill Cullen?

Live blog this week is happening at Every day is election day. So get on over there at 10PM tomorrow (an hour later) and share your thoughts as the drama unfolds.

The Apprentices favourite printer is up for 3 industry awards. Can’t be for price anyway.

Orla has new fella. She’s (wisely) not saying who it is, but “he would be quite well known”. Lucky chap whoever he is.

Ireland is Apprentice crazy. Despite being up against the nine o clock news and the Bertie documentary, last weeks episode had the highest viewership figures of the series.

Paddy hopes Brenda or Shane wins the prize, and is happy to be out of the bitchfest.

David McWilliams reckons an Apprentice style programme is needed to decide who the government should appoint as directors to the banks.

“If you think about it, a candidate chosen by Bill Cullen and the people in a public ‘Apprentice’-style process, has at least as good a chance of sorting out the financial institutions as a hopeful anointed behind closed doors by the cozy cartel of bankers who conspired to blow the boom. More to the point, it would be compulsive television. Just the type of thing we’d tune into on these winter nights.”

Great idea for a TV show David. Personally I’d much prefer an “I’m a banker get me out of here” style programme. Send the lot of them off to Australia to live on a diet of witchetty grubs and kangaroo testicles washed down with warm rat piss. For dessert, I’d set the Anaconda loose for a bit of post dinner squeezing.

With apologies to Ian for taking so long to get this online. I am a bad boy.

Review by Ian Walsh

This week’s show was always going to be the anti-climax after Joanna’s demise last week. None of her fellow candidates missed her as they all raised their champagne glasses and rejoiced in true ‘ding-dong the witch is dead’ style.

While we waved goodbye to Joanna there were remains of her bitching left back at camp. Shane was getting a little excited in getting his point across to Brenda and bordered on aggressive at times, but she persevered and went against him. Nicky and her part-time friend Orla were fighting yet worked together fine on the task but it was a different story in the boardroom.

This week’s task was to devise a new brand and logo to replace travel value shopping at Dublin Airport and it was a pretty poor attempt from both sides. Bill’s righthand man Jackie Stallone said it was ‘quite awful’. Team Phoenix and their primary school standard drawing/painting of an aeroplane on the wall certainly raised eyebrows. What were they thinking? It was absolutely SHOCKING from my point of view. But somehow they managed to win, on a kindof technicality.

This was due to Orla’s epic fail in not googling her teams name choice of ‘Buy n’ Fly’ which is already registered here. Orla was positive both she and the team did Google it, although she echoed Joanna’s style in being economical with the truth.

This should have been her downfall but sadly it wasn’t. Corkman Paddy O’ Dea got the chop. His ‘lovely way’ could not save him from this. In fairness he was throw in at the deep-end much to the amusement of the behind the scenes crew, when Orla and Nicky dashed off into town to meet the design team. Paddy was left to his own devices to design the display unit for the products.

I didn’t feel he deserved to be fire. True, he was a bit laid back and he had to endure the Nicky and Orla yawnfest in the boardroom. He wisely chose not to get involved, and fair play to him because he had no reason to do so. Nicky and Orla were warriors and fought to be given yet another chance. I feel Orla should have been fired for not doing her homework on the Buy n’ Fly name and for conveniently forgetting the fact she didn’t even Google it.

I am still sticking with Sarah to win, although Stuart is still the dark horse and is really proving himself in the run-up to the finale.

Next week we have to wait an extra hour for The Apprentice due to the return of I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here, so its 10pm and not 9pm, boohoo.

The reactions to Joanna’s departure from the Apprentice on Monday have divided people into two camps. Some thought she provided great entertainment and the show will miss her departure. Others couldn’t stand the sight of her and are glad she’s gone.

From what little I know about her background, she seems to fit the category of a person who has made money from her previous business venture and doesn’t really need to work. Entering the Apprentice was just something to do for a laugh and put something else on her CV. She played her part well in the show and reckons her career will go from strength to strength from here on out. I’d love to wish her good luck, but the recorded sequence of her departing from the show and gloating and laughing manically prevents me from doing that. I stuck it up on YouTube if you want to go look at it. That, and another video of Joanna making a presentation, have garnered some “interesting” comments.

Bill’s right hand man on the show is winning outside the boardroom in show jumping. Tally ho Brian

Jennifer Maguire and Bill are the best of buddies now. Apparantly she doesn’t even have a TV to watch the show, and heads over to her ma’s to watch it. Then it’s in to Ray D’arcy to have a chat about it the next day.

Despite having a big ring, Jackie Stallone says she’s not going to marry Billy boy.

Review by Ian Walsh

‘Oh my God’ shrieked Joanna when she learned that her ‘cream of the crop’ Team Dynamo had lost. This may have been one shock but the best was yet to come. Joanna’s usual frozen smile was soon turned to shock when Bill asked ‘Who is Ray Murphy?’ a hesitant Joanna looked as if she was going to deny knowing her own husband, as we later learned. We all know that Joanna is not one to ‘hide in the long grass’ or ‘wait in the bushes’ so it was always going to be an explosive exit.

Basically Joanna sent an email to her husband on Friday evening to ‘rally the troops’, aka her friends and family to raid a close by recycle centre and bring the goods to her recycle centre in Naas, unknown to her fellow team mates. I would suggest watching the show back again because I have done so and it appears a little more apparant to me. Of course this full scale fiddle proved to be Joanna’s downfall as all her hard work of cheating came crumbling down around her. She was asked ‘to think outside the box’ but Joanna ‘brought the box’ in her words. The one she was to be carted out of the show in, dominant till the end. That’s Joanna alright!

If she thought Bill had fired the girl with the ‘liaroidi’ she had another thing coming especially when her talk of making Bill choose who was to come back into the boardroom turned out to be a load of hot air as she brought in Orla and Nicky with her. They were clearly isolated from the task and were left pounding the pavements of Naas with megaphones, stilettos, and high visibility jackets. A bitchy Joanna defined her reason for this as ‘I couldn’t stand to spend even a second more with them’

Mark’s comment comes back to me about Joanna ‘burning her bridges’ with everyone in the house, and this is proof if ever there was proof.

This review has turned into the ‘Joanna show’ which would only delight the dethroned cheating “wagon face”.

Moving swiftly along then, elsewhere I thought team Phoenix were outstanding this week in all areas. They showed great initiative by getting their recycle day publicised on the radio and even by the priest at mass! The whole of team Phoenix would deserve to be in the final just based on that performance. Sarah was the stand out for me after her lacklustre performance as project manager last week. Both she and Shane were outstanding. She is also the only candidate not to be brought back into the boardroom yet. I’m going to back her to win now!

And after losing potential winners the last two weeks in the form of Mark and Joanna, it has blown the whole competition wide open for anyone to win now. So next week will be really make or break for the candidates and hopefully someone will take the lead as the new front runner.

P.S. by A.J.

I was going to do a Photoshop with Joanna as Jack Nicholson in the Shining, but I just didn’t have time. Instead here’s the screen cap I would have used. I should have used Joanna’s face for the Hallowe’en mask thingy I did.

Review by Ian Walsh.

We are now halfway through this ‘gruelling’ 12 week job interview. This week proved how reality shows can be really unpredictable and it threw up possibly the biggest shock so far, which really disappointed me.

The task was clearly something close to Bill’s heart, and no we are not back on Moore Street again but in the showroom of a Renault garage. The objective was but a simple one, to sell cars. But the cracks clearly began to show from the off. Mark was clearly bored off his head and it wasn’t half obvious when he showed where his bored head was :

‘‘I’d rather be selling bananas on Moore Street’’

This was a complete shock to my system, and I was concerned when I saw this attitude and thought nothing of it at first. I figured he would surely change his tune and step up to the plate, but it wasn’t to be.

Nicky was project manager for Dynamo, and had the difficult task of keeping Joanna on a tight leash. A bit of an impossible task to keep her in check it must be said. This meant Nicky left herself open to being manipulated and undermined. It wasn’t entirely Nicky’s fault but she was indecisive and couldn’t make a clear cut decision, the total opposite of Joanna.

It seems we have made the transition from the ‘long grass’ to the ‘bushes’ , where Joanna has been waiting for Nicky to be project manager. Joanna seems to be at home with nature, I wonder where will she be next. Among the flowerbeds? Who knows..

As I said last week we would all like the chance to see Sarah as project manager and this week was her chance to shine. I haven’t any real criticisms about her but at the same time I wouldn’t be going off raving about her, not yet anyway. Stuart was essentially the star man and rightly so because this was his forte. He went from zero to hero and put himself right back in contention for the ‘dream job’.

Obviously Brenda makes enough money in her bridal shop that she drives a car that doesn’t use a conventional key, as she came out with this quote while trying to start one of the Renault models:

‘‘its been so long since I used a key’’

Luckily nobody asked to be taken on a test drive, or better still she wasn’t asked to park the cars in showroom. One may suspect that it may have taken longer than Stuart’s ridiculous two hour tour de force.

Now to the boardroom where Nicky had no choice but to drag Mark and Joanna in with her. As usual Joanna played the innocent little girl act having no clue why she was there. She is someone who I could never work with. She appears to be confrontational, undermining and manipulative – traits that I can’t tolerate. Mark on the other hand was ready to go. He threw the towel in the moment the task started. This is the same guy that was Bill’s special one ever since we lay eyes on him five weeks ago. Subsequently it was an easy decision for Bill and Mark was fired.

I am on the fence regarding the decision, he did give up on that task there is no doubt about that but based on past form was it the right thing to let him go? I liked Mark and I am sad to see him depart. I am sure a lot of people will be too, including Bill. I think from this point onwards its going to get very interesting.

Just a quick note, spotted in the Daily Mail. Monday nights episode peaked at 405,000 views, I’d like to say well done to the show and to TV3!

Darren is taking the reigns of the live blog this week, the fun and games kick off just before 9 and if you’ve never joined a live blog, you should because it’s better than shouting at the tv screen.

Jennifer Maguire denies rumours of her and Ryan Tubridy being an item. She reckons it will be one of the women that will emerge as the eventual winner and I think she’s right too. She also says Bill is nicer than Sir Alan.

PS – Jennifer – if you’re reading this – thanks for replying to that email I sent you.

Meanwhile, the ab fab Orla McAdam is apparantly being swept off her Dundalk feet by some guy called Dave. Sounds promising and sure to last a long time.

UnaRocks wasn’t happy that Orla went last week and though Stuart should have gone. She has also heard from a little bird that next week is the episode to watch “because a lot of shit goes down.” Maybe Una should host the live blog next week.

That’s about it for this week. Car selling is the task for this week – should be good. See you at Darren’s at 9.
