Good mood food from Unilever?

Posted by: | Comments (2)

Is it just me or is there something really odd about a division of Unilever being involved in a healthy food initiative?

Irish food blogger and author, Donal Skehan, teamed up with Unilever catering to produce yummy recipes for students designed to wipe “high-fat, low-nutrition options off the menu”.

Unilever, the company that brings us pot noodle – a product they like to get into the hands of students during freshers week and get them hooked on slobby eating.

Unilever, the company that shows retailers how to stack Pot Noodle to maximise sales.

It’s the equivalent of Philip Morris getting behind a clean air initiative.

I should mention (as it appears to be obligatory), that the food blogger and author is constantly referred to as Ireland’s answer to Jamie Oliver. He should just change his name by deed poll and get it over and done with.

As God Commands – Niccolo Ammaniti
5/5

AsGodCommands

Text of review reads:

To think of Italy is to conjur up images of beautiful women, wonderful scenery and mouth watering food. The Italy portrayed in this book is very different. We follow the lives of a cast of characters in a small Italian village over a period of 6 days. They are a sorry bunch living desperate lives in an economically depressed area.

The introduction to 13 year old Cristiano and his alcoholic father, Rino, gives some measure of what is to come. The boy is woken from his sleep and ordered to shoot a dog to stop its incessant barking. Despite the boy living in terror of his father, he truly loves him.

Rino and his drinking buddies hatch a plan to rob an ATM believing it will lead to a better life. The story moves at a breathtaking pace leading up to the night of the robbery and the tragedy that unfolds. Violent, tragic, tender, melancholic, loving, brutal & humourous are all words that spring to mind as I try to sum up this stunning example of human emotions in raw form.

An absolute gem.

LowCalChips

Low Calorie Fish and Chips as offered by Beshoff’s in Dublin.

zsenya (owner of the image [cc]) quite rightly says “What’s the point?” . Obviously, there IS a point but a chipper isn’t the place to go if you want a low calorie meal. By the looks what’s in the box, the low calories are coming from less chips and less fish and a bit of salad thrown in for good measure. In fairness, maybe they are cooked in special low fat oil as well. You know, one of those good oils the Italians drink by the gallon and helps them live well into their hundreds. They tell the world it’s Olive Oil they use, but really it’s a secret oil nobody else knows about and is traded illegally and controlled by the mafia.

The unfortunate thing for the human species is that we crave fat. Hot, greasy, vinegar soaked chips satisfy that craving like nothing else. Eating a low calorie alternative must be like pouring watery milk on strawberries as a substitute for cream. Nah, either eat the nice foods and do some exercise or just get fat and deal with it. The low calorie option is for losers.
