What does Google tell us about our political leaders?
Posted by: | CommentsDan Ariely has a very interesting post on search terms boyfriends and girlfriends use on Google. Dan is the author of the excellent book ‘Predictably Irrational’ which is all about challenging the assumptions we make about rational thought and decision making. I read the book when it came out and it is a very enjoyable and fascinating read.
Thought it would be worthwhile to see what Google reveals about Irish political leaders. You can draw your own conclusions about them but here’s my take aways for each :
Brian Cowen – a figure of fun, not taken seriously. Worrying for a country that needs strong, authoritative leadership.
Enda Kenny – Very much seen as just being a leader of Fine Gael and also a cross dresser?
Eamon Gilmore – All about the politics – could do with going loosening the tie a bit more.
John Gormley – Strong green identity and an association with frogs.
Gerry Adams – Right now for Gerry it’s very little about politics and more about family issues.
And to round it off, there is Bertie Ahern. Not a current leader of course, this is just out of curiousity. It’s mostly the ook now. Bertie Ahern TD is low down on the list of search suggestions.
I have no idea how Google comes up with these results, and maybe your results will be different. Would be interested to know if they are. I’m going to try these search terms again in a month and see if they change.

The above is a group of friends who started the European jump project. Started in May 2007, the one of Dublin above was taken in August 2009. Great fun idea.

Ireland’s Real Rich List #6
Posted by: | Comments
Haven’t done one of these in a while, but @rickoshea of 2FM fame just tweeted something that deserves to go on the list. Didn’t hear the show (no radio at work) but a lady called in to say she is in debt to the oil company for €200. 5 children at home, and they all have to sleep in hats and coats.
20 minutes later, Rick updates his Twitter status saying
“That simple. That lady and her 5 kids are having their oil bill sorted by one incredibly generous listener. Wow. That was a good days work”.
and then :
“It has been a long and incredibly hard week. But for now, for this one moment, something good has come. Thanks to everyone.”
Wonderful stuff. To that person and all those who do good things that never get a mention, you’re on Ireland’s Real Rich List.
While I’m doing a post about the rich list, I’d like to give a hat tip to parishioners of St. Patrick’s Church in Wicklow Town, who donated over €9,000 before Christmas to the annual St. Vincent de Paul church collection. The biggest sum ever collected, despite the fact that money is tight for many sitting in the pews.
