AJ, there are times I despair with you: You suffer a bad cut and give a TIP? Tips are there to give feedback on good service received. That woman's ego will now be so inflated that she'll continue to give bad cuts only without anxiously asking whether it's ok. So, I am sorry to say that you have all bad haircuts in the neighbourhood on your conscience.

On the whole I am with John Braine on going to "poncey" hairdressers; though for a woman that's still no guarantee that they'll get it right. Male hairdressers in particular can be wilful in their creative urges instead of listening to what you want to have done (in my case practically nothing).

One observation regarding your chatty barber: The few times I accompanied my son to the barbers (currently - and gorgeously - his locks are way over his shoulders; a barber would die at the sight of it) I was always struck by their stoney silence throughout the procedure. The effort to tease out anything resembling a conversation did leave even me a little drained.

Anyway, can we have an up-to-date photo to judge for ourselves?

Can so relate to every word of this.

Barbers are so hit and miss it's like Russian Roullete. Somen of them are unbelievably bad at every element of the experience.

I've compeltely given up barber's recently for all the reason's above. I go to a poncey hairdresser and pay 3 times as much and it's worth every penny.
