Lotto or smokes?

Imagine that your daughter has a dream that you win the lottery. The dream is so specific that she rings you the following day with the winning combination urging you to buy a ticket.

You head out in the morning with the intention of doing the numbers. You go through the day’s work and the numbers are on your mind. Deadline for buying a ticket is fast approaching. You head to the nearest newsagent to get a ticket. Reaching into your pocket you find you only have enough money to buy a packet of cigarettes or a lottery ticket.

What would you do? Buy the lottery ticket or buy the cigarettes?

That was the dilemma facing Dublin man Albert Power. Unlucky for him that he chose to buy the cigarettes instead of the lottery ticket. If he’d taken the gamble he would be €1 million richer today. The midweek Lotto from last June wasn’t won, so his numbers would have given him the windfall.

Story was reported in the Star today. Seems a bit odd that we’re only hearing about it a year after the event though. Maybe he’s only getting the strength to talk about it now. An expensive packet of cigs they turned out to be anyway.

Dear god in heaven, AJ, that story makes my flesh crawl – and I am pretty resilient. The other day I made a very reluctant Felix (he thinks the lottery stinks and that I am wasting money) leg it as fast as only a seventeen year old with long legs can to get the lottery ticket in – just on time. Unfortunately, on his return, I realised that, by accident, I had voided one of my three lines. Not only did I find myself having palpitations but, worse, saying: If those numbers win I’ll kill myself.

Isn’t human nature such a work of art? There you are, week after week, willing your numbers to come through only to find yourself praying that those missed numbers won’t: After all, I don’t really want to kill myself. As it happens I am still alive.

Oh my god, that would have been worse if your numbers DID come out ! Lucky you – imagine the headlines if they had come up. Britain’s unluckiest person :)
