SummerField

Gorgeous photograph taken somewhere in County Wicklow. Literally jumped out when I was browsing Flickr. Great shot.

For some reason this story popped into my head when I saw the image.

Four young men sit by the bedside of their dying father. The old man, with his last breath, tells them there is a huge treasure buried in the family fields. The sons crowd around him crying, “Where, where?” but it is too late.

The day after the funeral and for many days to come, the young men go out with their picks and shovels and turn the soil, digging deeply into the ground from one end of each field to the other. They find nothing and, bitterly disappointed, abandon the search.

The next season the farm had its best harvest ever.

Crpybaby

Described as a “creepy baby in a dorm on Trinity’s campus”.

I’ll bet the doll in the window is a signal to whoever shares the room that the other person has company. Or maybe someone is being held against their will in the room and they managed to put the doll in the window (while their captor slept) in the hope someone would wander over asking the question “why is there a creepy baby in this dorm room window”.

What’s that on your washing line?

There is no sports fanatic quite as fanatical as a GAA fan of a small village in Ireland. Anyone that doesn’t support their local team is viewed with suspicion and mutterings of being a traitor. Stories of fist fights between players on the pitch spreading to spectators is not unheard of. Referees have been threatened and in one particular case a number of years ago, one was even “kidnapped” because of a disputed result.

There may be a little embellishment in the above, but the passion for the game and loyalty to the local team is without question.

I thought it funny when I heard recently about my niece’s sister. She plays for the team in Wicklow Town, 2 miles down the road from her home village of Rathnew. What team she plays for is not important to her. It’s the sport that counts – which is a great thing for all teenagers. Despite this (and here’s the funny bit ) when she hangs her team jersey out on the line to dry she places a tea towel front and back to hide it from fanatical eyes!
