Fishlagan

This fish head caught my eye this week. It’s a ceramic sculpture at Donegall Quay in Belfast by John Kindness. It was commissioned to celebrate the regeneration of the River Lagan.

“This 10 metre (32ft) Salmon made a big splash in Belfast in 1999. The work was commissioned to celebrate the regeneration of the River Lagan. The site is a significant landmark as it is the location of the confluence of the River Farset with the River Lagan (Belfast is named after the River Farset). The outer ‘skin’ of the fish is a cladding of ceramic tiles decorated with texts and images relating to the history of Belfast. Material from Tudor times to present day newspaper headlines are included along with contributions from Belfast school children (including a soldier and an ‘Ulster Fry’). The Ulster Museum provided the primary source of historic images, while local schools/day centres located along the line of the River Farset were approached to provide drawings for the fish. Images were provided by Glenwood Primary School, St Comgalls and Evrton Day Centres. The ‘Bigfish’ also contains a time capsule storing information/images/poetry on the City.”

It was a lovely idea to incorporate images and text on the work.

Pat Kenny leaving the Late Late Show

Patkennylatalate

After 10 years at the helm of the Late Late Show, Pat Kenny is set to hang up his presenting boots at the end of the current series.

To help keep track of this momentous occasion, I set up Is Pat Kenny Gone Yet?

Many thanks to Bohoe, Brazirish and John Braine on Twitter for help and suggestions with some CSS coding problems in displaying the counter on the site.

Only 55 more days and the plank becomes an ex presenter of the LLS.

Ran a competition a few weeks ago to win a superb signed poster of Edgar Mueller’s 3D artwork which was painted in Dun Laoghaire during the Festival of World Cultures.

There were 3 questions to be answered

1. How many photographs were taken by Edgar while the project was in progress?

2. How much paint (in litres) did Edgar use to paint the work?

3. What is the actual, real life, size of the painting?

The answers are

1. 1800 Photographs !

2. 120 Litres of paint

3. 240 Square meters

There were 4 entries to the competition. I took all of the answers and for each question, gave 10 points to 1st place, 5 points to 2nd place, 3 points to 3rd place and 1 point to 4th place.

After running through the answers 1st time round, Eolai and Tom both scored 18 points, Jennifer had 16 points and Sandy had 14 points.

Looking now at Tom and Eolai’s guesses

Tom :

1. 40 photos.
2. 140 litres of paint
3. I’d say that the painting is 20 metres x 50 metres

Eolai:

1. 60 Photos
2. 31 Litres
3. 252.3 Square Metres

Eolai was closest on 2 of the questions and therefore Eolai is the winner.

Congratulations! My head is spinning after all that.

Picturecompforkids

One of the local newspapers is running this Cute Kids Picture competition. Parents were asked to send a photo in of their “cute kid”. The entries are then all published in the paper with phone numbers so (presumably) readers of the newspaper can vote on who they think is the #1 “cute kid”.

But how on earth do you evaluate the cuteness of a baby? I’m saying this as someone who thinks they all look the same anyway. To me they are just blobs. 99% of them are admittedly cute blobs – in the same way most teeny tiny newborns are. Some people are able to see resemblances of parents in the features of the new blob. Parents just (naturally) see the most beautiful human being ever created – the rest of us play along and pretend they aren’t just blobs.

Back to the competition though. I just don’t understand the mentality of a parent putting their blob forward for this. The average reader of the newspaper isn’t going to bother their arse voting for any of these blobs. So who votes – the parents, the grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins etc. of the blob involved. If they happen to have a big family, they win the competition – simple as that. Nothing to do with the cuteness of the blob involved.

It’s a great way for the newspaper to make money though. Rought count – they have 1500 blob pictures to vote on. Let’s say each child gets an average of 50 votes (that’s a low estimate given that there will be multiple votes) – that’s €75,000 in phone charges. The newspaper doesn’t take all that money of course as the network operator takes the lions share. But still, that’s serious money for what is basically a vote for your own blob competition – slightly scammy if you ask me. Wouldn’t it be more honest to say “Hey parents, give us 50 quid and we’ll print a picture of your blob in the paper”?

And for the parents – how about just donating some money to a child’s charity in thanksgiving for the safe and healthy delivery of your baby instead of wasting it on phone votes.

Fools and their money….
