Hands up now – who watched the news on Christmas Day?
By aj@lecraic
Much head shaking was done when I read that the top watched programme on RTE over the Christmas was – THE NEWS….
760,000 people tuned in to watch it. That’s 760,000 people who haven’t heard enough about the depressed economy, the latest stabbing in Dublin or another fatal traffic accident. Surely it’s a day to switch off from all that. It’s a day to settle back and watch popcorn movies, play a game of scrabble, read a book, go for a walk – do something other watch the news. There’s a whole 364 days to concern oneself with the affairs of the world. Take a frickin’ break for one day, for the love of all that is Christmas.
After going on about it being time to give Father Ted a rest from TV schedules, here I am using Father Stone to illustrate this blog post. I can’t think of anyone better to do it as I have a picture in my head of 760,000 brain dead Stone-a-likes sitting on the sofa watching the news on Christmas Day. It’s a bit sad. Maybe not as sad as writing a blog post about it, but still – sad.

You mean that strangulation and arson in Kilkenny wasn’t CSI:Ireland?

That was an awful tragedy. That’s the news I heard on the radio when I woke on St. Stephen’s Day.

I will admit some fascination with the case, speculation as to why it was taking so long (dull Christmas). I’ll also admit to watching the news. Apart from the panel (on right now) I’ve had no control over the telly this Christmas. The news ended up being the one thing an itty bitty family committee can agree on.

Ah, that actually might explain the big numbers – the family committee thing. didn’t think of that!

I’m pretty sure I watched the news on Christmas Day. It’s a bit of normality on a crazy day, a bit of routine
And yes, it’s an exercise in appreciating how good you have it compared to those who’s Christmas holiday ends up on the 9 o’clock news

Very true – I’m too aware of the tragedies around us every day of the week – but deliberately switch it all off on Christmas Day.

We just got Sky+ after a drought of over 3 years so it’s a huge novelty… so far have recorded all the cheesy ones: The Goonies, Ghostbusters, E.T., as well as tonnes of documentary type stuff
Didn’t watch a thing on Christmas Day though, save for some sleepy-eyed thing about Blackadder. Didn’t even go anywhere the laptop and that’s REALLY saying something!

Blackadder programme was excellent – I don’t have Sky+ but the sister tells me it’s great too.
