Wise words about blogging from a young wise man

By aj@lecraic

The latest buzz in the Irish blog scene is the news that Twenty Major took off his blogging socks to concentrate on other, possibly more lucrative, things to do with his time.  It sparked off a very interesting and thoughtful post by Darragh Doyle over at The Blog Pound.

I took some time out this evening to have a good read of his post, and the comments people left.

Was going to make a comment over there, but I have a blog so I’m posting here instead.

Darren Byrne’s comment in particular said it all for me, in just one short paragraph.

“The great thing about blogs is that they defy labelling. From day to day a single blog can be a personal ranting space, a political commentary, a photo gallery, a place to advertise a service, a meeting point for the masses. There is no right, no wrong and nothing to solve”

This very post basically demonstrates exactly what Darren is talking about. I wanted to tip my hat to what Darren said, and my way of doing that tonight is some photoshopping.

As for tomorrow? Hey, maybe I’ll post a Youtube video or something. And if I do, it won’t be just a case of doing it for “sake of it”. I genuinely post something because a) I found it interesting and b) I think others might too. Beyond that, I don’t think there’s a lot more anyone can say about blogs or blogging.

I can’t tell if that last part is being sarcastic, or if I’m just touchy.

But anywhoo, I agree. Hooray for Darren.

2

There’s no sarcasm in my post all. What part do you think is being sarcastic?

3

i DONT blog because iv forgotten my password.

*shucks*

4

The post is neither interesting nor thoughtful. It is however, incoherent and poorly written.

And what little point it makes would appear to contradict the substance of Darren’s comment.

Ben, get your arse in gear man and sort the password problem out!!

Ah Darragh was just speaking from the heart and (as he said) it was a rant – but I always find what he has to say to be thoughtful and interesting

6

The bit about YouTube videos – it’s a sensitive subject of mine sorry!

7

No way Annie, I enjoy seeing the videos that others find interesting – I only quoted the “for the sake of it” bit because I’d read words to that effect in the comments over on the blog pound.

AJ, thanks for the link and the reply. I have found the responses and reactions to my rant quite surprising. It’s been very interesting to get so many different points of view.

On my own blog I post a variety of things that I find interesting or worth talking about and I’m always glad when other people do too. In the same way I prefer blogs like yours that do the same. It shares something about us, starts conversations, sparks ideas. It is a medium without right or wrong. It is personal. It’s a bit of fun. As Twenty said, it’s only words on a screen.

Darren looks good with the robe. I must see if we can persuade him to wear one for Halloween… :)

I wondered why Darren went out in that gown this evening. Solved. Thanks AJ.

ha haa, great photoshopping!

Genius! Just genius.

The Blog Pound post really came out of nowhere didn’t it. There have been so many ‘Twenty’ posts over the past few days, but that seems to have acted as a hub for so many differing opinions. Fascinating really.

I need to get in on this twenty major posts thing.

I think Darren’s comment just sums it up really !

@Darragh : Yep, That’s the whole thing about blogs, just getting an insight into what someone else is thinking.

@Lottie : ooo err, does he go out often dressed in a gown :-)

@Darren : I hadn’t been keeping up to date on other posts about Twenty, the Blog Pound was the first one I read. And definitely it has brought a lot of strands together. Had to dive through your website archives to find a photo that fit in with the pic just right!

Thanks Tina – I love the ‘oul Photoshop I do

@B’dum – Go for it dude

@Ian – He speaketh the truth

This is awesome, for the picture and the “I genuinely post something because a) I found it interesting and b) I think others might too”
