How to become Irish, Irish style
By
It’s almost impossible to believe, but you can read it at the Irish Examiner.
The cost of a certificate to become an Irish citizen has increased by an amazing factor of 8.
My guess is they’ve had to hire someone with great graphics abilities to redesign the certificate with the new seal of the office of Cowen. Powerpoint is expensive these days, or so I hear.

Was it ever that cheap? I remember looking into it a few years back, I’m British but considered getting naturalised, and before I was married it would have cost about £500 (pre-euro) for the process, and that was if I didn’t avail of a solicitor to help me out. My mate from Hong Kong spent about £1500 getting his wife naturalised through a solicitor, and she was married to a citizen (he did it a couple of years before). The actual issuing of the cert might have been €126 or so, but the over-all process was always a shite lot more than that.

Per the Examiner…
“Mr Flanagan said there were two increases this month in the cost of a Certificate of Naturalisation, or becoming an Irish citizen, which had increased from €634 to €960 since the start of August.”
So it looks like it’s just the certificate cost. Seems mad to me.

What is it with the Irish that always brings a smile to my face?
Felix thinks his mother is bonkers so I’d probably make quite a good honorary Irishman; sad but true, some things money can’t buy. Anyway, I’d have to work on my accent and intonation like mad. Still, as a precautionary measure, I shall open a savings account (target 1,000 Euro).

That’s mad. I didn’t realise you needed to pay for that at all, other than maybe a small administration fee.

Make it 1,500 Ursula, just in case it goes up again
I’d have thought the same Tina – would love to see a breakdown of cost!
