Weather forecaster’s job satisfaction
ByRight now I am listening to the rain pounding at the windows. There is the odd clap of thunder too. The weather forecasters were spot on. I wonder do they look out on a day like today and think “yeah, job well done”?
There was a picture of Gerald Fleming in one of the papers during the week. It was a feature piece on what was in store weather wise this weekend. The photograph was dark and ominous, taken from a low angle showing Fleming with the met office towering above him. He looked like he belonged on screen as one of Batman’s many sworn enemies. He definitely had what looked like a meteorologically evil grin in his eyes (as an aside : eyes are always the give away – never trust smiley smiley people unless the eyes match).
I can imagine Gerald opening the curtains this morning smiling at the deluge before whistling his merry way down to the kitchen for a bowl of crunchy nut cornflakes.
Damn those weathermen and their evil plans.

AJ, who – but a sad masochist – would volunteer to be a weather forecaster? It must be one of the worst jobs ever; roughly on a par with traffic wardens and their mean little note pads. There you are – with a fake smile – giving out bad news. And even if you give out good news you can bet your bottom rainbow that – next morning – it’ll rain anyway.
