The psychology of lifts and Ireland’s new alcohol licensing law
ByIf one of the aims of the new alcohol licensing law is to reduce underage drinking, then a look at this will explain why it will have no effect. Don’t know if this can exactly be called peer pressure, but it shows how easily we are swayed by the actions of others around us. The pressure to conform is immense.
Teenagers will continue to drink as they always have. I really don’t see the point of tinkering with closing times as a way to change behaviour. Seems more like an exercise in keeping a bunch of civil servants busy for a few months studying reports and making recommendations.

YOU Sir are so right !! This new law will NOT curb young people drinking! There is NO real solution to the liquor problem at all!
Here in Canada, well I think we could out drink you Irish under the table, for sure. As a recovering alcoholic though, and having just buried my beautiful late husband 11 months ago, I am attempting to warn as many Addiction Centre’s as possible, on the horrific health damage that every drop of alcohol contains. In addition to, what appears to be futile, our attempt to force Federal/Provincial Governments, to make it mandatory that all containers have large health warnings on them, AND raise the purchase prices. The latter I think, might just do wonders, but, we’ll have to wait and see, if it gets approved !?!
Best wishes on your endeavours !
I’ll try to keep you posted on ours !
God Bless.

I can understand there is a lot that feel the same way Rosie . We’re becoming/already are a nanny state.
Thanks for the thoughtful comment Sheila and all good wishes for your continuing recovery.
