It might seem like a sick joke but…

Yes, Taptips.ie is back - posters are up and presumably there is a radio campaign going as well. It’s all in an effort to remind us that water is a precious resource. This is despite the fact that we have 364 1/2 days a year with rain in Ireland. I’m sure someone could come up with statistics about how much water is wasted because of old and decrepit piping, but le craic doesn’t want to go there…
Even though we’re having a rather wet summer, I think it is good to get reminders to conserve water. I hate seeing water being wasted. One of the worst sounds for me is someone running the tap on full blast to wash out a glass, and then just take a small sip. There are far worse offences of course, but this is just my little pet hate.
A brief and random conversation a couple of days ago is what actually prompted me to write this post. Turns out I am a terrible water waster in the shower in the mornings. I’ve always showered the way most people do (presumably). Switch on the shower and keep it on while shower gel is applied etc etc. The proper way to shower (to conserve water), is to switch on the shower, wet the body, switch off shower, lather and then switch shower back on to rinse. This is what I do now and it makes a lot of sense.
Armed with this top tip, you too can become a super water conservationist, just like me! Aren’t you glad you stopped by today? Mother Earth thanks you.

Have to admit to standing under a hot shower and not doing anything. It’s a relief on an aching neck and shoulders though so I don’t consider it a waste. I only do the turning it off while lathering thing when we’re low on hot water.
I’m always trying to get the 4 year old to stop wasting water. Whether playing with water or brushing his teeth, I have to keep turning the tap off. I hate the sound of it rushing down the hole unused. Hard to get through to him. I imagine we all did it at that age.

Let’s just ignore for a moment what golf and country clubs do to keep them in lush green grass (yes, sprinklers):
When I came over to this country people had baths (once or twice a week) - indeed, when staying as a guest in a British household, one had to ask (?, yes seriously) whether it was ok to have a bath. As someone who was then and still is used to shower with abandon, take it from me: Leave on the flow and stop agonizing. We’ll all be shrivelled up and smelly six foot under soon enough. By which time our offspring will have invented ways to recycle all that water down the drain when cleaning their own children’s teeth.
U - and yes, I do compost
