Jessie Buckley isn’t Nancy
ByReally disappointed with the result of last nights ‘I’d do anything’. County Kerry’s Jessie Buckley was one of the favourites to win the show early on and in those early stages I thought, she’s the winner. Over the last 3 or 4 weeks I wasn’t so sure though. She gave some patchy performances and a couple of the judges seemed to turn against her (namely John Barrowman and Denise van Outen).
And so, at 6 yesterday evening I sat down to watch the final thinking that Samantha was going to win the role even though I was totally rooting for Jessie. By the time the 3 contestants had sung their songs I had changed my mind and felt Jessie was surely the winner based on performance. I fully expected Jodie to be announced as having come 3rd. When Samantha’s name was announced instead, I felt sure the Kerry girl had it in the bag especially after seeing her performace of ‘As long as he needs me’.
I got goosebumps during that performance and I thought to myself, I can’t wait to see her on the west end stage. The phone lines closed very soon after Jessie’s performance which I feel may have put her at a disadvantage. Jodie was seen as the underdog, also putting Jessie behind in the vote.
After the phone lines had closed, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Cameron Mackintosh stated their preference for Jessie in the Nancy role and it clearly showed that they weren’t very happy with the public vote going to Jodie. When asked by Graham Norton how they felt about Jodie winning, Lloyd Webber said “I always felt it would be the people’s choice, and it was”. Cameron Mackintosh said “I’m thrilled for Jodie”. Not exactly a ringing endorsement from the producer of the new show.
The show must go on and Jodie will take to the stage in December. How long she lasts is another question. Presumably she will be contracted only for a certain period of time and I’m pretty sure we will see Jessie take up the role of Nancy at some point and I hope I don’t have to wait too long for that to happen.

Finally, someone who agrees with me! I can’t stand Jodie–she over acts. And I don’t buy her tears or bubbly personality either–she is a phony! I thought Jessie was real, and I am annoyed they let her get away–she has remarkable talent and was the most beautiful of that lot.
“The people’s Nancy”? What bollocks!

I am English and I supported Jessie throughout the competition. I agree that she was at a disadvantage when the lines closed so soon after her performance. She was also disadvantaged by the fact that viewers in the Irish Republic were not given a vote. How unfair is that? jessie worked her socks of to deal with every criticsm from the panel each week. In the final it all came together. She gave as faultless a performance as it was possible to give. Her duet with Gwion was an absolute gem and the rest of her performance even drew the grudging approval of her fiercest critics on the panel. Lord Webber and Cameron Mackintosh were denied their Nancy by a combination of a strong northern English vote and an unfair voting system. I feel certain that they will not let Jessie out of their sight and that we shall see her shining talent on the West End stage, probably as the next Nancy. My bum can hardly wait to fill that seat.

Well, you should recognize bollocks, shouldn’t you? So you are right and the voting public are all wrong, it’s a wonder your head hasn’t fallen off–it must be very heavy.

I live in Scotland, and agree with every word Michael has said. From the first show, I selected Jessie as the most likely winner, and as the weeks went by she confirmed my faith.
Somehow though, in the back of my mind I had a feeling the UK audience would eventually go for Jodie, if only because of her age. Nevertheless, Jessie was the supreme star of the final, as so clearly evidenced by the comments of Andrew and Cameron. The viewing public should by all means pass their votes, but at the end, it should be the producer who has the final say as to who has the part.

i am still in shock! Jessie SHONE OUT in that final and was 100%
ahead of her fellow competitors. I think this has maybe shown.
that the public is not the best judge and hopefully ALW will choose his own leading ladies in future, or the quality of musical theatre will be compromised. I am sure they will not let jessie go and i certainly will not go to see the “over the top and too old” nancy!!
Jody has a great voice but for me,is way too strong for nancy. Can you imagine any man attempting to beat her up? bill sykes will need a body guard! Hope to see you soon, Jess

@Ida : The tears seemed over the top – can’t remember her being quite so emotional before.
@Michael : Yes, loved that duet she did – it was brilliant. I don’t get why the beeb didn’t open up the vote to Irish voters as other networks in the UK open lines for Irish votes. An Irish vote just might have swung it for her but we’ll never know I guess.
@Jennell : Ida didn’t say the voting public was wrong, but that the wrong person won in the end. We each have our own views and I’m with Ida!
@Michael : It’s a risk the producers take and in this case I think Mackintosh might regret taking his production through this process.
@Sheila : I’m not as enthused about going to see Jodie in London either. If Jessie is in something else in the West End at the same time I’ll definitely be happier to make the trip over.
@Eileen : Have you got insider info? Do tell!!

I don’t have any details, but every agent and casting director watches this show. Which means that there is usually something for all the finalists to do.

Jessie not winning is another example of why the public should not be allowed to vote in general elections!!!!

Oh! so if there had been a irish vote and no doubt jessie would have won that would have been ok then??? Winning purely because of racist voting.
The public voted the best choice, so get over it.

No Alex, that is not what is being said. What I mean is that in any competition the playing field should be level. That is that everyone is given an equal chance. The Isle of Man could vote for Sam, and did. She didn’t win. Blackpool and the rest of Lancashire could vote for Jodie, and did. On the other hand no-one in Jessie’s home town, Killarney let alone County Kerry were allowed to vote for her. Why? The answer is in this week’s Radio Times. It is BBC policy not to allow voting from outside the UK because outsiders do not pay a licence fee. You can send us your finest talent for our competitions but we aint Gonna let you vote for them. For all I or you know there may have been people in Ireland wishing to vote for Jodie or Sam. I am not suggesting for one moment that had there been an Irish vote then Jessie would have won. On the voting system operating on the night Jodie won fair and square. It was not her fault that her competion was deprived of an equal chance in the final.
As for the perfomances on the night. John and Tamsin said to Jessie that she had not been consistent throughout the series and therefore she did not deserve to win. That is like telling the team that scores the most goals in the cup final, that they are not the winners because their opponents played better in the previous rounds. That is just plain barmy. You might just as well scrub round the final altogether. In my humble opinion, for what it’s worth, I think that Jessie performed better than the other two in the final. Although the British public have got it right in the previous competitions I do honestly believe that on this occasion we got it wrong. I am English and I’ve lived here all my life. In the recent Britain’s Got Talent competition I have seen a phenomenally talented young girl in my home town voted out of the top three. Her name is Faryl Smith. Remember that name. The British public got it wrong again.

Oops! For Tamsin, substitute Denise. For some reason I can’t get Tamsin Outhwaite out of my head lately.

jessie without a doubt should have won, anyone with ears can tell that she has a much better voice!! I think that the emotion in jessie’s preformances is incredible, very believeable. On the other had jodie’s emotion is kind of samey!! I cant believe that the majority of the british public actually liked jodie better!! i refuse to believe it, jessie was just in another league compered to her!! Jessie will always be my nancy!!

Ok so I may be a bit biased living in Blackpool but its not just the voice its the whole performance. I will agree that Jodie wasnt the best singer and probably not the best actress but overall I think she did well. She has been very popular in the TV show and on teh stage. Infact her contract was only supposed to be 6 months she has completed 2 years I think.
Lets hope Over the Rainbow manages to direct the public to teh best person for teh job.
