One of those moments
ByI was sitting in a world of my own at work today around 1.30pm when a 22 year old and her friend approached. She apologised for interrupting me, (not that there was any problem with an interruption) and then asked could I spare a moment of my time. Yes, I said – not a problem. I was a bit taken aback with the politeness to be honest, as it makes a change from what I usually hear on a daily basis. That’s another story for another time, perhaps.
It turns out she and her friend are attending a course in Dublin for those with a stammer or a stutter. As part of the course she has to approach 100 strangers and start a conversation with them and then introduce herself.
I just thought to myself that this is an incredibly brave thing to do. To come up to a stranger in those circumstances and face what is probably one of the most difficult things for someone with a stammer to face. Actually, just walking up to a stranger and engaging in coversation out of the context of a gathering or social event is a difficult thing to do for anyone, period.
I just sat and listened as she spoke. When she finished she beamed, and I beamed right back at her. I introduced myself by name to her as well and we shook hands. As she walked away she high fived me and wished me a great weekend. I was just so delighted that I was one of the 100 people she chose to do the exercise with this weekend.
If by some chance you are reading this Lorraine – you made my day, week and month so far. Keep high fivin’ and smiling that wonderful smile of yours!
