Irish mammies defend yourselves and your sambos

By aj@lecraic

Sparsambos

Dear Spar,

Feck off would ye. What’s the matter with the sambos made by our Irish mammies? You think you’re great with your fancy “Signature collection” do you? Bagels stuffed with cream cheese and smoked salmon; focaccio bread brimming with olives and sun dried tomatoes with a hint of pesto. Big deal, we never asked for any of this fancy fare in the first place.

We were all quite happy with batch bread and tayto long before you lot muscled in our mammies territory. Are you saying that your stuff is better than the soggy tomato sandwiches with Brennan’s bread I used to eat when I went on school tours in the summer? I relished those and they were made with love and care, unlike yours.

No, be off and take it all back to the factory with you, we don’t want it any more. Our mammies are better than the Italian, Greek, Mexican and Jewish American mothers you mention in your ad. A signature collection indeed.

Yours etc,

le craic

What sort of sambo’s did your ma make for you? leave a comment with your favourites.

I took sambos to primary school every day. I remember Friday was always tomatoes.

I’m still a fan of the tomato sambo today as well, but with high fibre bread because white bread kills my stomach.

i used to insist on making my own with just flora and white bread, as i didn’t like ham or jam. tomatoes had no place in sandwiches in our house! it was academic anyway as i used to feed them to the stray dog that played football in the yard with the lads (Maradoggy, as he was called). until my brother rat me up, that was…

Marmite was what I got in school, my only complaint was there was never enough butter mixed in. But if you go hillwalking nothing beats white bread and peanut butter. Carb hit fast, fat to sustain and protien to help restore your shredded muscle tissue.

@Rosie – I couldn’t do without tomatoes – jam was good as well though. Maradoggy – great name for a dog :-)

@Thrift – I must keep the peanut butter thing in mind for next time I do a hill walk. I did Mountain Skills 1 in Novemeber and never got round to doing part 2 due to work but there is a hillwalking course coming up that I might go in if it fits with work.
