Pissed off with packing?

By

I don’t often catch Gerry Ryan in the morning but I did hear him on Friday  where a listener called in to say that he was fed up with having to pack his own bags in the supermarket.

He felt that there should be a better level of customer service at the checkout than having the operator just sit there, scan the goods, take your money and then start on to the next customer before you have had the chance to pack, leaving you feeling rushed to complete the packing job.

Ryan agreed with him in no uncertain terms, and I found myself nodding in agreement. It’s something I’ve long thought about, but like most Irish people I just accept the status quo and let things go with a shrug of the shoulder – “Ah, sure what’s the point of complaining, it won’t change anything”.

I remember a time when the checkout operator would always assist in packing bags or there were bag packers employed for the job. It’s common practice in America and, say what you like about Americans, they sure as hell know a thing or two about customer service.

I know there are 1,001 other more important things in the world to think about (and I do). This is something I think could demonstrate the power that we consumers have.

If you think you deserve a bit more love from your favourite supermarket, let the manager of your local branch know. Feel free to use the image below which you can download in large size and print out yourself.

I’d suggest you save it to a memory card and take it to a photo printing machine as it is sized to standard 6 x 4 inch photographic size. Since glossy prints are hard to write on with a ballpoint pen, you might need to write your name and address on the back.
