If you do one thing this week - watch the Last Lecture by Randy Pausch

Lastlecture

This is a book that I am looking forward to reading. It is by Carnegie Mellon University Professor, Randy Pausch. He has terminal cancer and was asked by the university to give a “last lecture.” The lecture was made available on the Internet and the reaction to it was amazing.

I watched it last year and was completely mesmerised by it too. Not only is this man a great charismatic speaker, he is also devoid of ANY self pity at all.

The lecture is entitled “Really achieving your childhood dreams”. The website of the book is The Last Lecture. Randy Pausch’s website is here.

I scribbled down some notes from it when I watched it before, and I’ve dug them out to give you a flavour of what to expect, but it’s nothing compared to watching him tell the story himself.

When you see yourself doing something bad and nobody’s saying anything to you anymore, that
means they gave up. Your critics are the ones telling you they still love you and care.

Experience is what you get when you didn’t get what you wanted

Brick wallks are there for a reason. The brick walls are not there to keep us out. The brick
walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something.

Get a feedback loop and listen to it. it can be just one great man who tells you what you need to hear. The hard part is the listening to it.

When people give you feedback, cherish it and use it.

Show gratitude

Don’t complain, just work harder

Be good at something, it makes you valuable.

Work hard

Find the best in everybody. You might have to wait a long time, sometimes years, but people will show you their good side.
No one is all evil. Everyone has a good side, just keep waiting, it will come out.

Be prepared. Luck is truly where preparation meets opportunity.

Hi
Talk about happenstance, while watching the ABC evening news last night with one eye on the TV and the other eye half asleep, I saw an item about Randy Pausch and an interview with Diane Sawyer, so today a little more awake I checked the ABC website and here is the link:

well worth a look. So thanks for the introduction to an inspirational person and a whole lot of wisdom.
Isn’t it great when you throw a small pebble and watch the ripples
Thanks again

How inspiring Randy Pausch is! If you liked “The Last Lecture”, another fantastic memoir I just read and highly recommend is “My Stroke of Insight” by Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor. Her TEDTalk video (ted.com) has been seen as many times as The Last Lecture I think, and Oprah did 4 shows on her book, so there are a lot of similarities. In My Stroke of Insight, there’s a happy ending though. It’s an incredible story! I hear they’re making it into a movie.
