Irish Barrister advertising designer available for hire at reasonable rate
ByNoticed in the Business Post that Barristers can advertise their services from May 1st. There are very strict guidelines set out by the Bar Council. Up to this, barristers were not allowed to advertise at all. The full report is at the Business Post website.
I am available for work as an ad designer for barristers – sample below (ad inspired by an old colgate toothpaste ad).

As barristers are retained by solicitors and not directly by clients, advertising is a bit of a waste of time if not actually counter-productive. Also, the lunch thing is a myth, unfortunately, as barristers have the same length of time for lunch as anyone else. We make do with a sandwich, and leave Thornton’s for dinner.

I never let facts come between me and a good old Photoshop session

The bar is no picnic. I’m afraid public awareness of a few fat cats has obscured the bigger picture. I studied for many years (and accumulated debt) now I have worked for no payment whatsoever for two years (devilling) and next year I may hope to earn next to nothing while I scramble around with five or more evening jobs to trying to bring in enough money to eek by on. This is the reality of life for most barristers in years 1-4. Hard truths but I suppose begrudgery is more fun. If it was easy everyone would do it.

The graphic above was intented as a bit of fun, not begrudgery at all. I don’t begrudge anyone their living but I do think barristers are fair game for a bit of a dig. I don’t know if they provide value for money at the tribunals (for example), but you’ll have to forgive me if I have the opinion that the fees seem rather high to me.
Regarding the process of becoming a barrister. I do remember watching a programme about it on RTE some time ago. It certainly isn’t the life for me. But then, if it was something I wanted to do with my life and had a passion for the law, I would suck it up knowing that there is light at the end of the tunnel.
Presumably you did take this career route fully aware of the cons along the way to more (hopefully for you) prosperous time.
Good luck with it all anyway and thanks for commenting.

“I would suck it up knowing that there is light at the end of the tunnel.”
Therein lies the problem, as I write this at 8:20pm on another night which I will work until 11. There is very probably no light (brief) at the end of the tunnel. I’ll continue to work multiple jobs before I burn out an give up. All very well if you have family connections and money, without it, the bar is a fools game.
