Why can’t we shop 365 days a year?

By aj@lecraic

Spotted on Henry Street, Dublin in Arnott’s window.

Big signs covering the front of all the windows advertising a 20% off almost everything* (*terms and conditions apply, only on stickered stock facing in an easterly direction and smelling of Lenor spring comfort).

Down at the bottom of the big sign is a note

“Due to EasterĀ  – Closed on Sunday 23rd”

Yes, Arnotts feel the need to almost apologise for the fact they are closed on Easter Sunday.

In retail there are only about 4 days a year when shops are closed. How long before we see a sign “Due to Christmas – Closed on December 25th”?

Security staff in shopping centres all over Dublin and the rest of the country will field many calls on Easter Sunday (as they do on Christmas Day) from people enquiring if the centre is open? Are there not enough opportunities to shop throughout the year? Relax people, take a day off, have a leisurely lunch, enjoy a walk on a beach or in the mountains.. The shops will be open again tomorrow.

Not sure about the city centre but I know where I live there is always a chemist open in the town (they have a rota system) on a Sunday for a certain amount of time.
